What is haulage insurance?

Haulage insurance is a necessity for many businesses, but before understanding what it is, it's best to clear up the occasionally confusing difference between a haulier and a courier. Put simply, couriers handle the transportation of packages that can generally be delivered by hand, where hauliers transport much heavier freight.

It might seem like a vague distinction, and occasionally it is, but it's an important one because your insurance carrier will very likely have two separate policies for haulage and courier firms. If you have the wrong type of cover and you need to make a claim, your insurer may refuse to pay out.

So what does it cover? Haulage insurance, like most forms of motor insurance, is designed to cover the vehicle in the event of an accident. You can have third party, fire, and theft haulage insurance, which is a base legal requirement, or fully comprehensive haulage insurance. Another consideration is whether the vehicle will be used for hauling goods that belong to you, or delivering for a third party. The vehicle's age, mileage, gross weight, and general condition will also be taken into account for loss adjustment purposes.

Do you need haulage insurance?

Haulage insurance is designed, and a legal requirement, for everyone who hauls freight. As with all forms of motor vehicle insurance when they're used on public roads, insurance is not an option. The level of cover you choose is up to you, however, you need at least the minimum cover required by Law on your vehicle.

If you own a business that's involved in the transport and delivery of freight using heavy goods vehicles, namely a vehicle over 3.5 tonnes, it's more than likely you're going to need to invest in haulage insurance. Similarly, if you're a self-employed owner-operator, you're going to need the appropriate level of haulage insurance on your vehicle.

It's important to remember that haulage insurance isn't just for haulage and logistics firms - it's necessary for all businesses handling the delivery of their own, or third party, freight.

What will haulage insurance cover?

A haulage insurance package can be as comprehensive or as basic as you want it to be. Generally speaking, haulage insurance is intended to cover the vehicle and the driver, as well as any other vehicles, people, or property, that might be damaged or injured as a result of an accident involving the vehicle. Accidents are liable to happen either when the vehicle is on the road, or where it's being loaded/unloaded at a customer's address or delivery point.

It's important to remember that due to their weight, heavy goods vehicles can cause considerably more damage even when involved in minor low-speed accidents. This makes haulage insurance a necessary consideration for all businesses that use heavy goods vehicles to transport freight. A haulage insurance package may also carry an element of "goods in transit" cover, which is designed to also cover the value of the freight being hauled by the vehicle.
