A new site measurement and reporting tool has been developed to reduce the 13 million tons of waste the construction industry sends to landfills each year.
Building Research Establishment (BRE) has developed a site measurement and reporting tool called SmartWaste. It helps those in the construction industry enter key data into the ‘waste transfer note’ without creating lots of paperwork. The system cleverly shows how much waste is being produced, compares it to benchmarks for the industry and shows you the areas where you can make improvements.
For construction companies this tool not only helps reduce waste sent to landfill, which is costly, but also improves efficiency. One company, Mace have reported a whopping 90 per cent reduction in waste going to landfill. Mace commissioned BRE to create a competitive “league table” for comparing the performance of its employees and subcontractors to generate a bit of healthy competition in the race to get waste down. It is hoped that this will help reduce their waste a further 20 percent by 2015.
If you’re in the construction industry, this product could help you reduce the cost of waste and boost your green credentials. SmartWise is available in the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands and Belgium, and it is soon to be released in Germany.
