Lack of safety inspectors angers UCATT
The Union of Construction, Allied Trades and Technicians (UCATT) has hit out at the HSE after learning that it will not be increasing the number of construction inspectors as the current recruitment drive will merely replace the retiring members of staff.
The Health and Safety Executive is currently looking to recruit 50 trainee inspectors to replace members of staff who are looking toward retirement however the issue lies in the fact that not all would go into construction.
A UCATT Spokesperson stated “Even if all 50 new recruits were to become construction inspectors, it still wouldn’t be enough.”
“Inspections have fallen, prohibition notices have fallen and prosecutions have fallen, yet at the same time deaths have risen. We’re in desperate need for more front line inspectors.”
Out of the UK’s main industrial sectors, the construction industry records the highest amount of fatal injuries with approximately 33% occurring on building sites.
Constructaquote.com recognises the importance of good health and safety and even rewards construction companies with a good health and safety record by adding even further reductions to our competitive public and employers liability insurance products.
