A very happy Christmas for online retailers
Online retailers saw a whopping 51% increase in sales over the Christmas period when compared to 2008, a new survey has shown.
The research, conducted by eCommerce specialist Actinic, also showed that many online businesses saw their turnover undergo significant growth during this period – with an average increase of 42%.
Actinic said that the trend highlights the increasing “price sensitivity” of consumers, with more going online to price compare and seek out the best bargains. Nick Kington, Managing Director of Actinic, commented:
“This is another impressive performance by online sellers in the SME market with many Actinic customers weathering the economic climate and reporting healthy increases in both order volumes and revenue.”
Kington went on to say that some of December’s larger value purchases could be credited to buyers wanting to benefit from the lower 15% VAT rate before it returned to 17.5% on the 1st of this month.
Despite last month’s online growth, the increase was not as high as the 48% recorded for Christmas 2007. It is also widely recognised that recent year-on-year sales increases may appear healthier than they actually are due to particularly poor trading during 2008.
