Would you pay for Facebook highlights?

The Facebook like symbolFacebook has started trialling a controversial new system that lets users highlight their posts for a small fee.

The system, which is on trial in New Zealand at the moment, allows users to make their posts more visible to ‘friends’ if they pay.

Facebook have said the goal is to see if members are interested in paying to flag information.

Comments on the "pay to promote" tests suggest the highest price being charged is £1.25. However there are cheaper options at 25p and 50p.

A Facebook spokesperson told the BBC that this is just one of the tests they are doing. They said: "We're constantly testing new features across the site. This particular test is simply to gauge people’s interest in this method of sharing with their friends."

Facebook’s recent slowdown in revenue growth has led some experts to believe that this is just the start of the company’s pursuit of new income streams.

The spokesperson would not comment on when the test would end or whether it would be tried in other territories. The new feature allows payments to be made via credit card or PayPal.

Founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg recently announced his marriage to long time girlfriend Priscilla Chan on the site, presumably without needing to promote his post, the news was immediately picked up worldwide.
