Small businesses are believed to have outperformed large businesses, new research suggests.
According to research by management school Roffey Park, liability insurance holders with less than 50 employees outperform larger organisations in employee wellbeing. However many managers have stated that small businesses need to invest more in staff development or risk stagnation.
The school surveyed more than 1,500 UK business managers and found that small businesses were stronger at leadership, job security, career progression and the ability to survive the recession.
It was found that the more staff an organisation had, the more likely they were to experience poor leadership, conflict and bullying.
Jo Hennessy, director of research at Roffey Park, said:
“Managers at smaller companies report better leadership, a stronger sense of collective purpose and that the company's values are practised more by managers.”
“Small businesses are more able to manage change and are more adaptable. There are less meetings and decision loops to go through if you decide to pull back on a product launch or investigate a new market.”
Small business owners & employees have been affected by the impact of the economy more positively than their larger counterparts with only one tenth of smaller liability insurance holders claiming to have been negatively affected.
