Better Gas Safe than sorry
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) states that dangerous gas work can be deadly and urges all gas engineers to register with Gas Safe.
The dangers of unsafe gas appliances are deadly serious. Poorly maintained, faulty or badly installed gas work will lead to carbon monoxide poisoning, the effects of which can be fatal.
Anyone employed to work on gas appliances in domestic premises must legally be Gas Safe registered and competent in the area of gas work.
Gas Safe Register replaced CORGI as the gas registration body in Great Britain on the 1st of April 2009 and is run by Capita Gas Registration and Ancillary Services Limited, a division of Capita Group Plc.
The Gas Safe Register is the only official register for gas safety which involves gas engineers legally able to perform gas work on boilers, hobs, ovens, fires and all other gas appliances.
This registration body ensures that all 120,000 gas engineers on the register are competent and fully qualified to work with gas. Those registered are provided with an ID card of which they must presented before undertaking any work.
The card means that they are qualified and legal to work with gas appliances to eliminate the drastic possibilities of a gas leak, explosion or exposure to carbon monoxide.
To minimise these risks, all workers expecting to work with gas in any way are required to register with Gas Safety. If not, the worker will be liable to serious prosecutions.
To further minimise risk it is also advisable to take out some form of public liability insurance to ensure you are covered against any eventuality.
