Guidance on minimum welfare facilities during construction work
A new information sheet has been published by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) on ‘Provision of welfare facilities during construction work’.
The information sheet replaces earlier guidance contained in ‘Provision of welfare facilities at fixed construction sites’ and ‘Provision of welfare facilities at transient construction sites’. It was published for duty holders involved in construction work who often neglecting basic requirements.
Basic requirements are being emphasised because good facilities can positively benefit health and well-being and can help to prevent dermatitis says HSE.
The new information sheet gives guidance on the minimum welfare facilities that must be available to workers on construction sites. These are:
-
Adequate toilet and washing facilities
This means flushing toilets and running water. Washing facilities must be available with clean, hot and cold water, toiletries and towels. They must be ventilated and cleaned frequently taking both men and women into consideration.
-
A place to warm up and eat food
Rest facilities should provide shelter from wind and rain. Heating water for drinks and for warming up food equipment is required. Adequate numbers of tables, seating with backs, and should be adequately heated. Facilities must also abide by ‘No Smoking’ policy.
-
Somewhere to store clothing
Provision should available to dry any wet clothing. Secure storage for personal clothing not worn on site and for protective clothing needed for site is very important. Items should be stored separately, where there is a risk of protective site clothing contaminating everyday clothing.
It is a legal requirement to purchase employers liability insurance as it can protect you and your firm against any illnesses or injuries your employees may incur whilst at work.
